Butterfly Song (For Brian Hecht)
This beautiful 5-minute song was written to show the simple beauty of simple things. It is written for either tenor or bass trombone and showcases lyrical playing throughout the mid-range of the instrument. Most of the melodic content is derived from a wind chime centering around the pitches of an E-major pentatonic scale, which floats and carries the lyrical melodies of the piece. Butterfly Song was written as a moment of peace, reflection, and meditation on the simple aspects of music and song and persuades the listener and performer to develop a richer musical interpretation of how a song can be felt rather than just heard.
It is written in memory of Cathryn Hecht Hix, mother of bass trombonist Brian Hecht. Brian currently plays with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and is an international soloist. More about Brian can be found at http://www.brianhecht.com/
