Shades of a Blue Devil - Trombone Quartet (Preorder)
Shades of a Blue Devil was written to bring comfort to the hurting, not in a way to elicit emotional change, but as a piece that lives in the pain with those who hurt. The term "Shades of a Blue Devil" harkens back to 17th century slang, where the emotions of melancholy, dispondance, and depression were commonly linked with demons and devils, slowly devouring the soul.
This piece, written in three movements, accentuates the character of the blue devils that may be preying on the hurt. The first movement, Prophesy, moves through the characters of loss, regret, remorse, and uncertainty. The second movement, Desolation, focuses on the character of despondency, anger, and loneliness. The final movement, Repentance, highlights themes of turmoil and stress before developing previously stated themes and distorting them into the complicated, messy emotional state we sometimes find ourselves in.
It is not a piece for resolution, but written as a statement of reflection.
