mEReLy dUsT was composed to be a commentary on the often romanticized value of a person's last breath. With the notion that a final breath is simply another breath; instead of being a graceful movement into afterlife, a last breath has no more meaning than the hundreds of thousands breaths that preceded it; these breaths are the ones that matter in a life, not the last. From a compositional viewpoint, the piece was derived from a hexachord based off a pitch class system stemmed from the DNA structures that genetically determine a person's life span, called telemeres. Apart from this hexachord, the composition hints at many Japanese musical ideas such as pentatonic scales and sounds resembling a taiko drum. In Japanese, the number four, used prominently in this composition to determine pitch class, sounds very similar for the Japanese word for death, thus creating superstition around the number four. The orchestration of the tape sounds came from sounds created on a trombone in non-conventional ways, (dragging the bell section across a waxed floor, spinning a rotor cap on a table, popping the slide section, etc.) These sounds were manipulated in ProTools Software and mastered to create the prerecorded accompaniment.
