From Fire's Dark Gaze
"From Fire's Dark Gaze" is a fanfare specifically composed with the advanced high school trombone choir in mind, but also has some brilliant colors and energy that will work well at the collegiate level as well. This work was inspired by the solar eclipse that occurred in the summer of2017. The piece starts with a blazing and triumphant fanfare, as was the sun, before the moon's shadow blocked all light. The second portion of the piece winds down quickly, portraying the eerie coolness of the sudden darkness. The rigid tempo relaxes to a rubato feeling as soloists trade the melody over soft, harmonic movement. The composition ends with a restatement of the opening theme, this time with added embellishment as the light is seen again after the total eclipse passes.
